A Patterned Sanctuary

Toorak Heritage Home Design

In Melbourne’s leafy enclave of Toorak, this 1920s–30s heritage home has been reimagined by The Stylesmiths into a soulful sanctuary of warmth and comfort. With its Tudor Revival architecture—pitched gables, double-brick bones, and a white-rendered exterior—the residence already possessed charm. The vision was not for transformation through structure, but through interior design that celebrated character, colour, and comfort.

The design brief was clear: create a cosy and timeless home for a mother and her young son, layered with personality and joy. Inspired by richly textured British interiors, the palette centres around calming blues and greens—woven through wallpapers, rugs, upholstery, and custom soft furnishings. Pattern-on-pattern became a unifying theme, balanced by organic warmth in rattan, timber, and hand-finished textures.

Each room tells its own story yet speaks the same design language. A crisp white fireplace anchors the living space, its bay window framing lush garden views. Custom upholstery, layered textiles, and playful touches—such as a sculptural gold palm lamp—add character and modern eclecticism. Existing artworks and vintage pieces were seamlessly integrated, bringing soul and authenticity to the layered scheme.

The result is a bespoke interior that honours heritage architecture while creating a haven of harmony and intimacy. This project exemplifies The Stylesmiths’ approach: thoughtful design that balances history with contemporary living, crafting home interiors that are both beautiful and deeply personal.
