Located in Melbourne’s creative suburb of Brunswick, The Gentle House is a contemporary family home that demonstrates how thoughtful interior design can create spaces that feel calm, timeless and deeply connected to the way people live. Designed by The Stylesmiths alongside Adrian Gaetano Architects, the project combines Japanese-inspired design principles with natural Australian materials to deliver a home that prioritises wellbeing, functionality and craftsmanship.
From the street, the home presents as a bold architectural form clad in black timber. Step inside and the atmosphere changes immediately. Warm timber, recycled brick, natural stone and filtered light create interiors that feel welcoming, tactile and quietly luxurious.
Central to the design is a carefully curated material palette inspired by the principles of wabi-sabi. Recycled brick introduces texture and history, while warm timber joinery, plaster finishes and natural stone create subtle layers that evolve throughout the day as the light changes.
Custom joinery forms the architectural backbone of the home. Integrated storage, concealed appliances and sculptural timber walls allow the home interiors to remain uncluttered while supporting everyday family life. In the kitchen, a concrete island appears to float above timber cabinetry, creating a striking centrepiece that balances robust materials with refined detailing.
The home’s central courtyard ensures every major room enjoys a connection to landscape and natural light. Full-height glazing and sheer curtains soften the interiors throughout the day, while carefully positioned architectural lighting highlights the texture of brick, timber and stone during the evening.
Bathrooms continue the same restrained design language through travertine, onyx, natural timber and bespoke cabinetry, creating calming spaces inspired by luxury boutique hotels and Japanese bathing rituals.
Rather than following trends, The Gentle House celebrates enduring design. Every material has been selected for its longevity, tactile quality and ability to age beautifully, creating a home that feels established from the day it was completed.
