Blairgowrie House is a contemporary coastal residence on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, redesigned by The Stylesmiths to reflect the owners’ love of art, entertaining and bold materiality. Originally a traditional beach house, the home was transformed into a full-time residence that balances modern interior design with relaxed coastal living.
The project focused on redefining the open-plan living areas to create stronger zoning, functionality and connection throughout the home. Working closely with the clients, The Stylesmiths developed bespoke interiors across the entry, kitchen, dining and living spaces, introducing a layered material palette inspired by the surrounding coastal landscape and the owners’ extensive art collection.
A defining feature of the home is the use of Yaki Sugi charred timber, which wraps both the exterior façade and interior feature walls. Paired with polished concrete, blackened steel, handmade tiles and custom joinery, the materials create a contemporary yet grounded aesthetic that feels warm, textural and deeply connected to nature. The charred timber also acts as a fire-resistant exterior finish, blending seamlessly into the native vegetation surrounding the property.
Throughout the interiors, bold artwork and colourful furnishings contrast beautifully against the darker architectural finishes. Custom entertainment joinery divides the expansive open-plan living areas, creating distinct lounge and dining zones while maintaining flow and openness. In the kitchen, matte black cabinetry, bronze mirror splashbacks and integrated storage solutions bring a sophisticated edge to the coastal home design.
Lighting was carefully layered throughout the residence to create atmosphere and highlight key architectural and artistic features. Track lighting illuminates the curated artwork collection, while pendant lighting and softer ambient fixtures introduce warmth and intimacy into the living spaces.
