Loch Avenue Residence is a contemporary Ballarat home that thoughtfully balances Victorian heritage architecture with modern interior design and globally inspired styling. Designed by The Stylesmiths in collaboration with Here Studio Architects, the residence blends old and new through a layered and highly personal approach to family living.
Located within one of Ballarat’s historic neighbourhoods, the home’s restored Victorian façade was carefully designed to sit comfortably alongside neighbouring heritage properties. Traditional verandas, restored leadlight windows and subtle grey tones honour the original architecture, while contemporary interiors introduce bold textures, curated furnishings and modern functionality. Navy accents, crisp whites, brass detailing and sculptural lighting create a sophisticated interior palette that complements the home’s period features.
The project brief focused on creating a clear distinction between the original home and the contemporary extension while ensuring both spaces felt connected through personality and storytelling. Throughout the residence, carefully selected furniture, artwork and collected objects reflect the homeowner’s international lifestyle and appreciation for Asian design. Vintage Chinese furniture, Chinoiserie wallpaper and globally sourced décor pieces are layered with contemporary finishes to create a rich and eclectic interior that feels cohesive rather than overly styled.
Living spaces were designed to feel warm, relaxed and highly functional for entertaining and everyday life. Leather upholstery, timber finishes, textured rugs and statement lighting create inviting zones that encourage conversation and connection. At the centre of the contemporary extension, a striking glossy green fireplace anchors the open-plan living area, balanced by softer rounded forms and natural materials that add warmth and flow throughout the home.
Circular elements are repeated across furniture, rugs and mirrors to soften the stronger architectural lines and introduce a more organic feel to the interiors. This layering of shapes, textures and cultural references creates a modern eclectic home that feels deeply personal, refined and timeless.
