Parisian Vibes

Some homes ask for cohesion. Others ask for contrast, and Nelson House sits confidently in the latter. Designed by The Stylesmiths for a busy family of five, this project explores how differing tastes, spatial challenges and everyday demands can be brought together into a home that feels both elegant and entirely liveable.

Rather than forcing a single design direction, the approach was deliberately layered. The clients’ contrasting aesthetic preferences became the starting point, resulting in interiors that feel collected rather than prescribed, a hallmark of thoughtful residential interior design in Australia. Across the master bedroom, living room and dining space, the focus was on creating rooms that could shift effortlessly between family life and entertaining, without losing their sense of refinement.

Volume played a significant role in shaping the design. With soaring ceilings in the main living areas, the challenge was not space, but how to make it feel grounded. Through carefully considered furniture layouts, oversized rugs and custom soft furnishings, The Stylesmiths introduced a sense of intimacy, bringing warmth and proportion back into the open-plan environment.

In the master bedroom, the design takes on a more immersive tone. A floating custom joinery installation transforms the space into a multi-functional retreat, part bedroom, part workspace, without compromising its sense of calm. Rich, moody layers are balanced with tactile finishes, while a herringbone rug subtly references classic Parisian chevron flooring, grounding the room in a refined European influence.

Lighting and materiality are where the project quietly excels. From sculptural fixtures to layered textiles, each element has been selected to soften the architecture and heighten the sensory experience. This is particularly evident in the living and dining zones, where a mix of colours, fabrics and finishes creates depth without overwhelming the space. The darker wall tones act as a backdrop, allowing artwork and personal objects to evolve over time, an intentional decision that ensures the home can grow with the family.

Storage and functionality are seamlessly integrated throughout, supporting the practical needs of a household with three children while maintaining a polished, design-led outcome. This balance between beauty and usability reflects The Stylesmiths’ approach to home design and interior styling, where spaces are created not just to be admired, but to be lived in.

Nelson House ultimately captures a sense of relaxed sophistication, a home that draws on Parisian influence without imitation, blending elegance, flexibility and personality into a space that feels both curated and comfortably unfinished.
