The HUB Café was designed as a relaxed, community-focused destination where locals can meet, work, recharge and enjoy quality food and coffee in a warm, welcoming environment. Located in Melbourne’s inner-north suburb of Northcote, The Stylesmiths were engaged to create a flexible and approachable café interior that reflected the laid-back character of the area while supporting the practical needs of a busy hospitality venue.
The design direction centred around creating a space that felt authentic, effortless and connected to the local community. Drawing inspiration from the building’s warehouse origins, The Stylesmiths developed a café interior that balances vintage character with contemporary detailing. The result is a refined yet approachable hospitality space that feels instantly familiar and comfortable.
At the heart of the café is the custom-designed retail counter, which acts as the primary interior focal point. Referencing old food store shelving and vintage retail fixtures, the counter introduces texture, warmth and personality into the space while reinforcing the café’s neighbourhood identity. A simple blue dado line and carefully considered use of colour create subtle focal points throughout the interior without overwhelming the relaxed atmosphere.
Polished concrete flooring, mid-century inspired furniture and curated artwork work together to create a layered and casual aesthetic. These softer vintage-inspired elements are contrasted by clean contemporary branding and exterior graphics, giving the café a modern edge while maintaining its local charm. The material palette was selected for both durability and warmth, essential qualities in successful hospitality interior design.
The flexible floor plan allows the space to adapt throughout the day, accommodating everything from quick morning coffees to long lunches and casual meetings. Natural light, open seating arrangements and thoughtful styling help create a calm and social atmosphere, encouraging customers to linger and return.
