Glen Eira City Council’s transformation of the historic Caulfield Town Hall demonstrates how thoughtful workplace interior design can modernise heritage buildings while supporting the evolving needs of a contemporary workforce. Designed by The Stylesmiths, the project reimagined multiple levels of the council offices, creating flexible, collaborative and future-focused workspaces that enhance both employee experience and community engagement.
The brief centred on replacing traditional cellular offices with open-plan workplace environments that encourage collaboration, flexibility and hybrid working. Spanning workstations, meeting rooms, breakout areas, social spaces and the public-facing Service Centre, the redesign introduced a variety of workplace settings tailored to different styles of work while maintaining respect for the building’s historic architecture.
A key focus of the project was sustainability and longevity. Materials were carefully selected for their durability, environmental performance and ability to withstand the demands of a high-traffic public workplace. A timeless palette of soft greys, greens and blues is complemented by warm terracotta and yellow accents, creating welcoming spaces that feel professional, contemporary and connected to the community they serve.
Furniture and finishes were sourced with sustainability in mind, incorporating recycled materials, low VOC products and circular economy initiatives wherever possible. The result is a modern government workplace that balances heritage character with innovative office design principles.
This project showcases The Stylesmiths’ expertise in workplace interior design, government office fit-outs and sustainable commercial interiors, creating a dynamic workplace environment designed to support collaboration, wellbeing and long-term adaptability.
