Burwood Federation House is a carefully considered heritage home renovation by The Stylesmiths, blending original Federation architecture with contemporary family living. Located in Sydney’s multicultural suburb of Burwood, the project reimagines the classic red brick residence into a warm and highly functional home designed for entertaining, relaxation and modern everyday life.
The renovation focused on preserving the home’s original character while introducing contemporary interiors that feel timeless and connected. Restored archways, stained-glass windows, decorative mouldings and re-stained timber flooring celebrate the home’s Federation heritage, while layered natural materials and bespoke finishes bring softness and warmth throughout the interiors.
At the front of the home, moody navy tones and vintage-inspired furnishings create an intimate reading room centred around the fireplace. Velvet curtains, leather seating and curated lighting add depth and texture, balancing heritage charm with contemporary styling. Throughout the residence, oversized artwork, plush furnishings and neutral tones create calm and inviting spaces tailored to family living.
The contemporary rear extension introduces open-plan living, dining and kitchen areas designed to maximise natural light and indoor-outdoor flow. Skylights, steel-framed glass doors and linen curtains soften the architecture while connecting the interiors to the landscaped backyard and pool area. A large timber dining table, natural stone finishes and layered textures create a relaxed European-inspired atmosphere ideal for entertaining.
The kitchen interior design combines handcrafted Moroccan Zellige tiles, marble surfaces, walnut detailing and bespoke joinery to create a sophisticated yet highly functional family kitchen. A hidden butler’s pantry provides additional storage and preparation space, supporting the needs of a large family while maintaining the kitchen’s clean and refined aesthetic.
