Designed for clients transitioning from a large family home to inner-city apartment living, this Southbank residence by The Stylesmiths balances minimalism, functionality and contemporary luxury. Located high above Melbourne’s CBD, the apartment offers sweeping city views and immediate access to the city’s dining, shopping and cultural precincts, creating the perfect low-maintenance lifestyle for downsizing without compromise.
While the apartment featured strong architectural bones, the interiors lacked warmth, personality and practical storage solutions. The Stylesmiths approached the project through a refined and minimalist interior design lens, introducing bespoke joinery, layered textures and carefully considered materials to maximise both function and visual flow throughout the home.
One of the project’s key challenges was the placement of two large structural columns that interrupted the living and bedroom spaces. Rather than concealing them, the design transformed these architectural elements into defining features using slim grey and white finger tiles that add texture and subtle character. In the dining area, a custom timber dining table with stone inlay was designed to curve seamlessly around one of the columns, integrating it naturally into the layout.
Custom storage solutions were thoughtfully integrated throughout the apartment to support modern apartment living. Joinery within the entry creates hidden storage and seating, while the master bedroom features a bespoke banquette with concealed drawers flowing into a built-in study nook overlooking Melbourne’s arts precinct. These tailored details maximise functionality while maintaining the home’s calm and uncluttered aesthetic.
A dramatic bookmatched marble feature wall anchors the main living area, introducing depth, movement and understated luxury into the interiors. Soft creamy whites, black accents and warm hints of orange layered through textiles and rugs create a timeless palette, while curved furniture and rounded detailing soften the apartment’s architectural lines.
